Project Managementul ecosistemelor acvatice şi a resurselor de apă aflate sub presiuni multiple / Managing Aquatic ecosystems and water Resources under multiple Stress, having the acronym MARS, has as main objective to provide support for managers and decision makers in the practical implementation of the Water Framework Directive, related legislation and European policies in the field of water, by:

  • synthesizing existing information and developing new research on the effects and management of multiple pressures on surface water bodies and groundwater;
  • advising on the third cycle of planning management plans and the revision of the Water Framework Directive, and
  • development of new integrative tools for diagnosis and prediction of multiple pressures in the water resources management process.

The MARS project was initially funded through the European Union’s FP 7 Programme (Grant Agreement 603378) and then, starting with 2015, through the HORIZON 2020 Programme, between 1 February 2014 and 31 January 2018.

Within the project, the National Administration “Romanian Waters” is an Application Partner, together with a consortium of 20 prestigious research institutes from: Germany, Austria, Denmark, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Netherlands, Slovenia, Norway, Finland, Romania (Danube Delta National Institute for Research and Development), Greece, Spain and Portugal, as well as 3 other implementing partners, including the International Commission for the Protection of the Danube River. The project leader is the University of Duisburg-Essen, Germany.
