Detection and Integrated Assessment of Non-authorised water Abstractions using EO
Release Date: 01/01/2017
Duration: 36 months
Financing: European Commission. Horizon 2020 – Satellite Observations Program
DIANA Project Description – Integrated detection and assessment of unauthorized water abstraction using satellite observations: co-design and development of a commercial services platform that will enable water managers and authorities to improve their techniques for identifying and verifying unauthorised abstraction for irrigation and improve their water management policies and practices, especially in extreme conditions such as drought. DIANA will leverage satellite observation data from the Copernicus programme and other sources, as well as the latest models to identify (illegally) irrigated areas and estimate abstracted water volumes to provide a range of value-added data products and services that will be convenient and cost-effective. Three pilot areas will be established to be tested in a real operational environment in Spain, Italy and Romania (Banat). All pilot areas will be integrated into the users’ workflow, and the results will be evaluated and validated together with them through a multi-level methodology, which will favor the acceptance of DIANA platform as a viable solution.
